This is the overview of the SwellAngler fish guide: the species recorded across five regions, plus a plain account of what this database covers, how seasons are verified, how sources are tiered, and what we deliberately do not do. Every species has its own page, and each name below links straight to it.
Only your region is expanded by default; tap a region name to open or close it. Each fish name links to its full page.
The scope is five regions: Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and the United States. Each region holds a different number of species, and the index below shows the live count — we will not hard-code a number just to look tidy.
Every species carries its water type (saltwater, freshwater or brackish), typical size, in-season period, habitat and suggested methods. Bycatch with no angling value — nothing on record, or nothing anyone would target — is left out. That is a deliberate cut, not an oversight.
A season here means the angling season, not the spawning period — the two can differ widely. A season is only written when there is a citable source: official fisheries material, research literature, or regional catch records.
Where the evidence is not good enough the field is marked pending rather than filled with an estimate. That is why some species show a blank season: it is the honest state of the database, not unfinished work.
Every species page ends with its source list, and each source is labelled with a tier. A tier describes how trustworthy the source is and whether it is first-hand — not how good the fishing is.
Forum posts and content farms are not accepted as season evidence. If a region only has general-tier sources for a species, it is marked pending rather than treated as confirmed.
No catch guarantee: the seasons and water types are reference material, not a promise that you will catch anything. Weather, current and the day itself will always matter more than a table.
No safety call: this database must not be used to decide whether a mark is safe. Check the official forecast before you go out and judge the conditions yourself.
No live filtering: to filter by water type, season or habitat, or to search a fish name directly, use the Species tab in the app — that is the interactive tool. This page is the index and the explanation.
If you hold reliable sources, catch records or photographs for a local species, we would welcome them by email. We verify each source before it goes in — nothing is added just because someone said so.
