About

The Florida pompano is a benthopelagic carangid of coastal waters, commonly entering bays and estuaries, recorded from 1 to 70 m. Juveniles are found on sandy beaches exposed to wave action, and adults are absent from insular areas with coralline habitats. It generally forms small to large schools and feeds on mollusks, crustaceans, other invertebrates and small fish. Maximum length is about 64 cm total length, commonly about 40 cm, and it can live seven years. It is a highly commercial species, farmed commercially, a gamefish and kept in public aquariums, with excellent flesh and the highest price of any marine food fish in the USA. Fishing vulnerability is low to moderate at 27 of 100 and resilience medium, and the price category is very high. IUCN lists it as least concern.
