About

The orange-spotted grouper is one of the larger and commoner groupers in local waters, an ambush predator that lives around reefs, rock crevices and wrecks. Once hooked it lunges for cover, so heavy line and a stiff rod are needed to pull it clear early. It can be caught all year but is most active in the warmer summer and autumn months, and it is a key boat-fishing target and a premium market fish in Hong Kong.
