The peacock hind is most at home in the 1-10 m reef zone. It is territorial: a mature male typically presides over a group of females and defends a home range that can cover 2,000 sq m, though it is sometimes solitary. Fishes make up 75-95% of the diet, with crustaceans taken as well, and it feeds mainly at dawn and late afternoon. Commonly about 40 cm, reaching 60 cm. A high-priced grouper sold in Hong Kong live fish markets, but large reef individuals carry a ciguatera risk.

Differences by region

Caution: large individuals carry a ciguatera risk. Heat, cold and marinating do not remove the toxin, which concentrates in the liver, roe and head, so avoid eating those parts. Seek medical help if numbness, tingling or a reversed sense of hot and cold follows a meal.
