About

The peacock wrasse is a labrid, usually solitary over fine to coarse sand in lagoons and on seaward reefs, and rarely seen above 20 m. Two habits are worth knowing: it dives into the sand to sleep at night and to hide when alarmed, and its juveniles mimic drifting dead leaves by holding the elongated front of the dorsal fin forward over the head. It feeds on hard-shelled invertebrates including molluscs and crustaceans. Maximum about 42 cm total length. The flesh is very white and good to eat, and it sits in the top price band. Found all year.
