About

The yellowstripe scad is the only member of the genus Selaroides, a small inshore jack marked by a broad yellow band that runs from above the eye to the tail base, plus a black spot on the gill cover. It schools in large numbers over soft bottoms on the shelf; in Malaysia it has been recorded to 70 m but is most common between 40 and 60 m, feeding on crustaceans, small fish and plankton. It is a major commercial species — between 113,000 and 195,000 tonnes were reported worldwide each year from 1990 to 2010, with Malaysia among the main producers — and it reaches the market fresh, chilled and dried, and deep-fried with nasi lemak in Singapore and Malaysia, where it is known as ikan kuning. Trawls and small traditional nets take most of the catch, while anglers use sabiki strings baited with prawn from boats or fish the deeper channels from shore.
