Biology and fishery

It is told apart by a fully scaled breast and a black-tipped second dorsal fin; the body is silvery blue-grey above and silvery below, sometimes with a broad brassy band along the flank, and the caudal fin is yellowish. The species is split into two populations that do not mix — one from the Persian Gulf east to the Bay of Bengal, the other across South East Asia and Indonesia — and Smith-Vaniz has suggested they may in fact be two separate species. It lives inshore, in bays, estuaries and around rocky and coral reefs, feeding on bottom-dwelling crustaceans and small fish. It is of little commercial importance, mostly turning up as bycatch of hook-and-line fishing or trawls.
