About

The yellowfin seabream has a sharper head and a vividly yellow anal fin and lower tail lobe, and it is among the commonest bream in Hong Kong waters. Its range is confined to the East Asian shelf of the north-west Pacific: the coasts of Honshu (including the Seto Inland Sea), Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, southern Korea, Taiwan, China from about Shanghai southwards, and northern Vietnam down to Hué, with no records from the Ryukyus, the Ogasawara Islands or the Sea of Japan and older reports from elsewhere in the Indo-Pacific now treated as misidentifications of close relatives. It lives around coastal reefs and over sandy-mud bottoms and tolerates fairly low salinity, so it is often found near river mouths. It moves inshore around September to November and, because it is shy and picks at baits carefully, many anglers rate it the hardest of the local breams to catch.
