Gulf grouper (Mycteroperca jordani) is a saltwater species recorded in the United States. It is mainly found over reef, at depths of 5–30 m.

Scientific name: Mycteroperca jordani · Water: Saltwater

Size: up to 198 cm

About

The Gulf grouper is an epinephelid found in rocky reefs and kelp beds, from 5 to 30 m. It is an important game fish largely because of its size, and large adults feed on fishes and have been reported to prey on juvenile hammerhead sharks; the few large adults taken at the northern edge of its range are probably expatriates from a more southerly breeding population. Maximum length is about 198 cm total length. It is a minor commercial species and a gamefish, with a high price category. Fishing vulnerability is very high at 85 of 100 and resilience very low. IUCN lists it as endangered.
