About

The frigate tuna is an epipelagic fish of neritic and oceanic waters. Its range covers the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean and the western and central Pacific, with the eastern Pacific population recognised as the subspecies Auxis thazard brachydorax. It matters in the food web: its sheer abundance makes it a key forage species for many commercially important fish, and it is itself preyed on by larger fishes including other tunas. It feeds on small fish, squid, planktonic crustaceans such as megalops, and stomatopod larvae. Commonly about 60 cm and up to 65 cm fork length, maturing at about 29.5 cm and living 5 years. A top-priced fish, available all year, sold fresh and frozen and also dried, salted, smoked or canned.
