About

The blackeye thicklip is a labrid of subtidal reef flats, lagoons and seaward reefs. Juveniles live inshore among branching corals, while adults keep to areas of mixed sand, rubble and coral, with the largest fish in deeper water. It feeds mainly on small invertebrates, especially crustaceans, polychaete worms, molluscs and brittle stars. It is found from 0 to 30 m and sits in the top price band. The largest measured individual was 37 cm total length, and the literature notes that more than 45 cm is unlikely against a reported maximum of 39.6 cm. Medium population recovery, with a fishing vulnerability of 36 out of 100.
