About

The Japanese meagre, 鮸魚 in Taiwan, is a large sciaenid reaching over 1.5 m and the fish behind Taiwan's fifth-ranked 「五鮸」 delicacy. Its range is fragmented: the south-east African coast from the Cape of Good Hope to southern Mozambique, the northern Indian Ocean off Pakistan and north-west India, the northern Pacific from southern Korea and Japan along the Chinese coast to Hong Kong, and the whole southern seaboard of Australia from North West Cape to the Burnett River. It works the inshore and the outer edge of estuaries, and is a prized big-fish target for surf and boat anglers.
