About

The dotdash goatfish is a mullid and one of the most abundant Parupeneus species. Adults are solitary or in small groups over large sand patches and the sand and rubble of reef flats, reaching about 100 m on lagoon and seaward reefs, while juveniles keep to small groups, often mixed with other species in sparse seagrass. It is diurnal and uses its barbels to turn over sand for bottom invertebrates; among 19 adults the stomach contents by volume ran crabs first, then worms, small bivalves, brachiopods, shrimps and small gastropods. Commonly about 30 cm and up to 60 cm total length, maturing at about 19 cm. Found all year.
