About

The striped mojarra is a demersal gerreid whose adults inhabit shallow coastal waters, and it is common in brackish water, mostly over mud bottoms in mangrove-lined creeks and lagoons, often entering a considerable distance into fresh water. It feeds on aquatic insects, crustaceans, small bivalves and detritus, and it is marketed fresh and processed into fishmeal. Its range is the western Atlantic, from South Carolina and western Florida and the entire Gulf of Mexico to Brazil, and it is absent from the Bahamas and the smaller islands of the West Indies. Maximum length is about 40 cm total length, commonly about 30 cm, and it matures at about 22 cm. It is a minor commercial species and a gamefish, with a medium price category. Fishing vulnerability is low to moderate at 34 of 100 and resilience medium. IUCN lists it as least concern.
