About

The longfin batfish is an ephippid; large adults live in sheltered bays and deep offshore water, often in small groups around shipwrecks and occasionally in large schools. Its juveniles are the interesting part: they drift with floating debris and gather in schools beneath the Sargassum rafts that form after the wet season. Juveniles inhabit shallow protected inner reefs while adults reach lagoon and seaward reefs at 20 m or more. Maximum about 70 cm total length. Edible but not esteemed, and not an important game fish. Found all year.
