Green chromide

Green chromide (Etroplus suratensis) is a brackish species recorded in Singapore. It is mainly found over sand, estuary, mangrove.

Scientific name: Etroplus suratensis · Water: Brackish

Size: up to 40 cm

About

The green chromide is a cichlid native to the estuaries, lagoons and brackish waters of southern India and Sri Lanka, where it shoals around weed and mangrove roots grazing on algae, plant debris and small invertebrates. In Singapore it is an introduced species found in estuaries and tidal reaches; the literature gives a usual 20 cm and a maximum of about 40 cm, a laterally compressed fish flecked with pearly spots. Its bite is gentle, but it gathers in numbers, so bread, an algae bait or a small hook baited with prawn and fished slowly close inshore will catch it. As an introduced fish it should not be released after capture.
