About

The hampala barb, or sebarau (Hampala macrolepidota), is a predatory cyprinid common in the rivers of Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo, holding in rapids, rocky runs and estuary reaches. Its wider range covers the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins, the Malay Peninsula and Indonesia. Adults show a bold black vertical bar and feed mainly on small fish, hitting lures fast; it is a classic light-tackle target that reaches good sizes. It is active year-round and fishes especially well along nearshore structure when monsoon rains colour the water.
