About

The slender tuna is a pelagic oceanic scombrid and an occasionally schooling species that feeds mainly on krill as well as on squids and small fishes. Juveniles are found between 20 and 35 degrees south at surface temperatures of 19 to 24 degrees Celsius. Its flesh is paler than that of most true tunas and is very oily, though the cooked meat has fine eating qualities, and it is mainly marketed fresh. It is recorded from the surface down to 20 m. Maximum length is about 105 cm fork length, commonly about 86 cm total length. It is a minor commercial species and a gamefish, with a very high price category. Fishing vulnerability is moderate to high at 51 of 100 and resilience medium. IUCN lists it as least concern.
