About

The marbled grouper is an epinephelid usually found on deep ledges, at depths to 210 m and on reefs, usually in caves or deep crevices. It is solitary and secretive and darts away when approached or frightened, and it is rarely seen in markets; the major threat to the species is fishing pressure. It is recorded from 3 to 213 m. Maximum length is about 91 cm total length, commonly about 50 cm. It is a minor commercial species and a gamefish, with a very high price category. Fishing vulnerability is high at 61 of 100 and resilience low. IUCN lists it as data deficient.
