About

The Red bigeye is a priacanthid with large eyes and a deep red body, known in Hong Kong as the bigeye and in Taiwan by a name that the Fisheries Research Institute and the market both use for this species. It is a bottom fish of inshore and offshore reefs, found from 12 to 400 m, apparently forming aggregations over open bottom and very abundant in the South China Sea and Andaman Sea. Strongly nocturnal, it hides under ledges and in reef caves by day and feeds at night, so it is mainly caught on night boat trips, and it is a species known to produce sound. In season in autumn, it reaches about 30 cm and 0.5 kg, and IUCN lists it as Least Concern.
