The Yellow grouper is a small, yellowish-brown species speckled with orange, living over rock and sandy-mud ground from 10 to 50 m, with juveniles common in tide pools. Hong Kong calls it the yellow nail grouper and Taiwan the yellow-spotted grouper. In season in autumn and reaching about 60 cm total length, it is a protogynous hermaphrodite that starts life female and later changes to male. Modest in size but an eager feeder, it is a common grouper of Taiwanese rock and boat fishing, best taken on light rock-fishing tackle with shrimp, squid strip or small live shrimp. It turns aggressive in captivity, chasing and biting other fish, especially its own kind, and is sold live in Hong Kong markets.
