About

The slender giant moray is the longest of the morays - recorded up to 400 cm total length, with about 70 cm more typical. Its best-known behaviour is that it extends itself vertically from a burrow with its head held horizontally just beneath the surface, rising and falling with the tide. It lives over muddy bottoms and in estuaries, sometimes entering rivers and inner bays. It is solitary and feeds mainly on small fishes and crustaceans. Population recovery is slow and its fishing vulnerability of 87 out of 100 is very high. Marketed fresh and eaten locally.
