About

Scorpaena mystes is a demersal scorpaenid found in shallow water on seaweed-covered reefs as well as on open, sandy areas, and it is recorded from the surface down to 30 m. It is an opportunistic predator, a cryptic fish that lies unseen on the reef top waiting for small fishes to pass by, and its spines can inflict a painful wound. Reports differ on the risk, so check an authoritative source before handling one. Although the flesh is of excellent quality it is not utilized commercially. Maximum length is about 45.7 cm total length, commonly about 30.4 cm. It is taken in subsistence fisheries and is a gamefish, with a low price category. Fishing vulnerability is moderate to high at 55 of 100 and resilience low. IUCN lists it as least concern.
