Sea raven (Hemitripterus americanus) is a saltwater species recorded in the United States. It is found at depths of 2–180 m.
Scientific name: Hemitripterus americanus · Water: Saltwater
Size: up to 68 cm
The sea raven is a demersal hemitripterid that inhabits rocky or hard bottom and is a voracious eater; its food includes crustaceans, mollusks, sea urchins, fishes such as herring, sand lance and silver hake, and any bottom invertebrates that are available. When taken out of the water the belly becomes inflated, so that when the fish is returned to the water it is unable to submerge. Adults attach their eggs near the base of a sponge to use as a spawning bed. It is recorded from 2 to 180 m. Maximum length is about 68 cm total length. It is a gamefish and is occasionally used as bait. Fishing vulnerability is high at 64 of 100 and resilience low; no IUCN assessment is recorded for it.
