About

The potato grouper is a giant among the groupers, reaching 2 m. Adults favour current-swept deep reef channels and seamounts, while juveniles turn up in tide pools. It takes reef fishes, rays, crabs and spiny lobsters. It is extremely territorial and aggressive towards intruders; individuals used to being hand-fed by divers can be dangerous to the inexperienced, which also makes it easy prey for spear fishers. A high-priced fish sold in Hong Kong live fish markets.
