The Spotted sweetlips is a haemulid, or grunt, marked by diagonal bands and spots. Its range runs from the Arabian Sea to southern Japan. It inhabits coastal reefs, keeping to rocky and coral ground, and it is a familiar sight in Hong Kong's live fish markets. Taiwan calls it 加志, and also 花軟唇, while Hong Kong calls it 花細鱗. It is found over the sandy-mud bottoms and oyster racks of western Taiwan and around the reefs of Penghu, and although small-mouthed it bites readily and fights steadily, making it a common bottom catch on Taiwanese raft and boat trips and a regular entry in the Ocean Conservation Administration's angling reports. It can be caught all year and reaches about 60 cm total length. IUCN lists it as Least Concern.
