About

The ide is a benthopelagic leuciscid whose adults are usually found in large lowland rivers and nutrient-rich lakes, recorded from 15 m downwards, and no maximum depth is recorded for it; it also enters brackish water. Adults are solitary while juveniles are gregarious, and they migrate to tributaries to spawn in moderate current over gravel or submerged vegetation. Their food consists of various aquatic and terrestrial animals and plant material, and larger individuals feed mainly on fishes. Its range is Europe and Asia, in the Baltic, Black, northern Caspian and North Sea basins and the Atlantic basin southward to the Seine and lower Loire drainages, absent from Scandinavia north of 69 degrees north, and in Asia eastward to the Lena drainage and the Aral basin, with introductions to Great Britain and northern Italy. Maximum length is about 85 cm standard length, commonly about 30 cm total length, and it can live 29 years. It is a commercial species, a gamefish and a commercial aquarium fish. Fishing vulnerability is high to very high at 69 of 100 and resilience low. IUCN lists it as least concern.
