The five-lined snapper is a lutjanid of sheltered lagoons and exposed outer-slope reefs; at 30-40 m it often gathers in aggregations of more than a hundred, while juveniles are solitary in shallow, sheltered bays over algae and rubble. It feeds mainly on fishes and crustaceans. Commonly about 30 cm and up to 38 cm total length, and it can live 31 years, so its populations recover very slowly. A high-priced fish, available all year.
