About

The roundjaw bonefish is an albulid of mud flats on turbid inner reefs, mangroves and sandy lagoons, grabbing its food off the bottom with its snout. It has an unusual trick: a lung-like air bladder it can fill with air, which lets it tolerate poorly oxygenated water. It mass-spawns on the lunar cycle at the seaward mouths of channels. It feeds on invertebrates, bottom-dwelling species, molluscs and small crustaceans. Maximum about 90 cm standard length. It is sold fresh in markets but rarely eaten. IUCN lists it as Vulnerable, with a fishing vulnerability of 54 out of 100.
