Splendid alfonsino (Beryx splendens) is a saltwater species recorded in Taiwan. It is found at depths of 25–1300 m.
Scientific name: Beryx splendens · Water: Saltwater
Size: up to 70 cm
The splendid alfonsino is a berycid whose adults inhabit the outer shelf at about 180 m and the slope to at least 1,300 m, probably moving further off the bottom at night, and are often found over seamounts and underwater ridges; in the northwest Pacific it is treated as one of the straddling stocks. It feeds mainly on fishes, crustaceans and cephalopods, is oviparous and spawns in batches, and its juveniles, eggs and larvae are pelagic. Its range is circumglobal but excludes the northeast Pacific and the Mediterranean: in the western Atlantic from the Gulf of Maine to the Gulf of Mexico, in the eastern Atlantic from southwestern Europe and the Canary Islands to South Africa, and in the Indo-Pacific from East Africa to Japan, Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand. It lives from 25 to 1,300 m, usually between 400 and 600 m, and reaches about 70 cm total length, commonly 40 cm, and up to about 4 kg, living about twenty-three years. It supports commercial fisheries and is a game fish, marketed frozen, in the high price band, with a trophic level of 4.3, high fishing vulnerability at 59 of 100, high climate vulnerability at 58, and low resilience.
