The comb grouper is an epinephelid whose juveniles inhabit turtle grass beds, mangrove areas and shallow waters among soft corals and coral reefs, while adults are found on rocky bottoms with high relief, from 3 to 70 m. Maximum length is about 80 cm total length. It is a minor commercial species and a gamefish, with a high price category. Fishing vulnerability is high at 58 of 100 and resilience low. IUCN lists it as least concern.
