About

The hound needlefish lives over lagoons and seaward reefs, alone or in small groups, feeding on fishes. It has a dangerous reputation: when alarmed, or drawn to lights at night, it leaps clear of the water and its long, sharp snout can inflict puncture wounds, so fishers treat it with care. It is sold fresh and counted a good food fish, but its market is limited because the flesh is green. Commonly about 90 cm and up to 150 cm total length, maturing at about 52 cm. It can be taken on surface lures by casting or trolling, and also in purse seines and drift nets.
