About

The Malaysian mahseer (Tor tambroides), known as kelah or empurau, is one of the country's most iconic freshwater fish, holding in cool, highly oxygenated upper streams. Its range is Asia, in the Chao Phraya and Mekong basins, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java and Borneo, with reports from Myanmar and from the Salween and Mae Klong rivers. Its flesh is prized as among the most expensive in Malaysia, and it is a benchmark sport fish with immense power and stamina. It is catchable year-round, peaking during the dry-season upstream spawning runs; because some states and sanctuaries (such as Lake Kenyir) ban taking it, most fisheries practise catch-and-release.
